Deer were introduced into NZ for sport, but have become a pest in the wild. Now red deer and wapiti(elk), with some fallow deer, are found on deer farms throughout New Zealand. The highly prized venison is exported to Europe, and deer velvet to Asia. Hunters still target red deer and wapiti, with the six other species that can also be hunted.
